Recipes for Dry Cough and Throat

pears with honey

I don't know about you but this winter has been super dry and causing me some grief. Not only have I had skin so dry and itchy that you could sand wood with it but also with a dry cough that sorta weasels its way into our house and meanders in and out in and out at all hours.

So to battle the dryness I decided to dig out one of my cook books. Cook book? How is a cookbook going to fight the dryness? Because my dears food is medicine! This particular cookbook is called Ancient Wisdom, Modern Kitchen Recipes from the East for Health, Healing and Long Life by Yuan Wang, Warren Sheir, and Miaka Ono. If you click on the title you can check it out and see what you think. I love this cook book because it gives you great recipes but also teaches you about food theory is Asian traditions and some history all the while delivering tasty, healthy and healing food. So I thought share two really simple recipes to help with Lung dryness, dry throat and dry cough.

First up is.....

Ginger-honey Pears

2 medium size pears, peeled

2 tablespoons honey

2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

3 table spoons water

Steps:

1 preheat your oven to 350

2 Cut off the tops of the pears and put them to the side. Cut the core out of the center and the bottome

off so you can stand the pear up but you want to be sure to keep the sides and bottom intact. Put them

into a glass dish.

3 In a small bowl mix honey, ginger, and water. (heat it to get the honey to dissolve, if you need to)

4. Fill each pear with the honey mixture and put the top of the pear back on. Next bursh the sauce onto

the outside of the pear. Save two tablespoons of the the sauce for later.

5. Bake the pears for about 10-12min untill the start to soften

6. Take them out of the oven and drizzle with the remaining sauce and put them back into the oven. and broil

at a hight setting for 3-5min, until the glaze has caramelized.

Serve them warm.

THese little beauties are great for anyone who is suffereing from a dry cough, dry throat, bronchitis, asthma, upset stomach, or nausea. If you are interested in the Chinese medicine lingo this dish is helpful for Lung yin deficiency, dry heat, and fluid deficiency, and harmonizes the Middle Burner.

The next recipe that I am in love with is called

Take-a-deep-breath Baked Lime Apple

1 medium sized apple, any variety, cored (leave the skin on)

Juice of 1/2 lime

Steps:

1. Preheat the oven to 350

2. Pour the lime juice over the apple

3. Bake for 30-40min, or until the apple is the desired softness.

DONE! What super simple

This dish is really good for preserving youthful skin, soothing all types of cough, calling irritability and quenching thirst. The Chinese lingo- this dish clears Heat, generates fluids, and moistens the Lungs.

Happy Eating!
